5.3.4.1 Oracle Lock Duration In Oracle, all locks acquired by statements within a transaction are held for the duration of the transaction, that is, it implements strict 2PL. The locks are released when the transaction holding the locks commits or rolls back. In addition, Oracle implements the concept of a savepoint. A savepoint is a point in the transaction to which the changes can be rolled back. Oracle releases locks acquired after a savepoint when rolling back to the savepoint, but continues to hold those locks obtained before the savepoint. 5.3.4.2 Oracle Lock Modes In general, Oracle employs exclusive and shared lock modes. Locks with exclusive lock mode (ELM) are obtained to modify data. The rst transaction to lock a resource exclusively is the only transaction that can alter that resource, until the exclusive lock is released. Locks with share lock mode (SLM) are used to allow several transactions to acquire share locks on the same resource, at the same time, so they can read the resource. Holding share locks on a resource prevents concurrent access by transactions trying to modify the resource. 5.3.4.3 Oracle Lock Types From a different viewpoint, Oracle supports three types of locks: DML locks, DDL locks, and system locks.
